Year 4 Update Wk 19
- 29th January – Year 4 Theater Trip
- 4th February – Chinese New Year Evening for parents
- 5th February – China Day Activities
- 5th February, 3.00 pm – Chinese New Year Holiday
- Colder weather is coming!
Please make sure that all uniform items are labelled. This week we have noticed many students have left jumpers and jackets in the cubbies and around the classroom, only to bring more the following day. If you are ‘layering up’ your child please insist that they remember to take home what they take off.
- Music
Please be aware of your child’s music day as they need to bring their ukulele to school.
4M – Thursday
4W & 4J – Friday
- Theatre Trip
Year 4 are off to the theatre on the 29th January. Please make sure all permission slips and cheques are returned as soon as possible.
- Toys, School Bags and Bad Backs!
Please remember that toys are not permitted to come to school. Loss, damage and safety are reason why BHS asks children to leave their precious playthings at home.
Please check your child’s school bag for any excess toys. While you are there, please remove any ‘non BHS’ items. Library books should only be coming to school on the class library day.
Unit Of Inquiry
We have come to the end of yet another journey into the world of exploration and discovery. The children have demonstrated their knowledge and understanding of why people discover and how these have impacted our lives.
PE
We have begun our unit on Adventure Challenge. This PE unit focuses on teamwork, problem solving and perseverance. Here is an example for you to try at home. In class we will be using movement to solve it as a team.
A man has to get a fox, a chicken, and a sack of corn across a river.
He has a rowboat, and it can only carry him and one other thing.
If the fox and the chicken are left together, the fox will eat the chicken.
If the chicken and the corn are left together, the chicken will eat the corn.
How does the man do it?
Spelling
Each class has completed the BHS Term 2 Spelling test. It has become very obvious that children are not putting ample time into learning their spellings at home. Please encourage your child to practice. Playing word games such as Scrabble, Boggle and online games (Reading Eggspress has a spelling component) and let’s not forget Spelling City, will also be a great benefit!
How We Express Ourselves

Attitudes: Confidence, Creativity
In the coming week we will be completing our provocation and pre-assessment.
Multiplication and Division
Central Idea – Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are related to each other and used to help us solve problems
Lines of Inquiry:
The methods that are used to solve calculations
The operations of multiplication and division
The different relationships between the four operations
The children will be:
- Multiplying 3 digit by 2 digit numbers
- Dividing 3 digit by 1 digit numbers with and without remainders
- Calculating multiplication and division questions mentally
- Modelling multiplication and division using arrays
- Estimating and rounding to check answers
Tables, Tables, Tables – Please make time in your very busy days to included practice, games and use of times tables up to 10 x 10. It is expected that the students can recall basic multiplication and division facts quickly. For fun games you can check out McK’s Maths Madness (Click Here).
Narrative
This is our second unit on Narrative writing where we are hoping to consolidate skills in the following areas.
- Using and identifying complex sentences.
- Consistent use of past tense
- Using the basic mechanics of writing when editing
- Use of dialogue
The Narrative style we are inquiring into is Folk Tales. We encourage you to share the Folk Tales you grew up with that are part of your culture with your child. They can then share these with the class.
