Please note we will inform you if these arrangements change.

This week, Year 2 children went to L.E.A.P, they learnt about food for life and developed their understanding of how they can have a balanced diet. The children were able to interactively learn through the programme about the digestive system, media influence and the safe use of medicine. This was a great opportunity that BHS children have each year which connects well to our Unit of Inquiry. The children were very excited to meet Zelda and see Harold the giraffe.

Lifestyle choices can affect human health and well-being

The children continued to inquire into the 5 elements of a healthy lifestyle; nutrition, hygiene, relaxation, relationships and exercise. We have been reflecting on the relationships we have and why they are important to us. We learnt more about nutrition and how to have a balanced diet during our L.E.A.P visit. Next week we will be looking at how hygiene contributes to human health and well-being.

The operations of addition and subtraction are related to each other.

Next week we will be exploring the relationship between addition and subtraction facts. The children will be reviewing and learning different addition and subtraction strategies to help them problem solve. We will also begin to look at word problems which the children will be asked to create an appropriate calculation for and then solve, and show their working-out.

We will continue to look at procedural texts in class and focus on the features of the genre (title, goal, requirements and steps). Next week we will work in groups to construct our own procedure.

Our grammar focus will continue looking at the important role verbs play at the beginning of a sentence. We shall be learning to identify these from different texts.

In the learning centre the children have been learning to alphabetise books in the library. Lots of the children in Year 2 have been helping Ms Jeves during lunchtimes to put books back on the shelves alphabetically.

Home Reading books

Children are receiving their home readers daily. Please remember that this book is to improve your child’s comprehension level and, therefore, they should be able to decode the text quite easily. Over the coming weeks, we will be formally assessing all Year 2 students’ reading levels and setting their reading targets. Please can you make sure that an adult is reading with your child every night. If you can write a comment and sign your child’s reading journal each night.

Spelling

Your child will receive their spelling words to learn every Friday . The children have been given a list of 6 words and they have chosen a further 2 words to learn at home. As explained at meet the teacher, we ask that children complete 3 activities and record one inside their spelling jotter. Could parents please sign the jotter to show that children have carried out the activities. We will have our spelling test on a Friday.

Fruity Friday

Every week at Beacon Hill we will be having our own ‘Fruity Friday’. Children are asked to bring a piece of fruit as their healthy snack. We will let you know in advance if and when PTA will be selling fruit so that your child can bring in money then.

Green Team

We are helping to care for the environment in Year 2 and across the school. We will be focusing on recycling and reusing. It is our aim to have all children with a reusable snack box, lunch box and water bottle. We would like children and parents to help us by leaving any unnecessary packaging at home.

Please can you make sure that all your child’s belongings are all labelled with their name and new class.

Please can you make sure your child comes to school with a healthy snack and lunch, as well as a reusable water bottle.

Thank you.
