Please note we will inform you if these arrangements change.

We hope that everyone enjoyed the public holiday yesterday. The children have been making super progress in Year 2 and are settling into their routines very nicely.

We have been introduced to sequencing and this week we correctly arranged instructions for growing a bean plant. In Maths, we have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and thinking about number patterns both mentally and during practical tasks. We had fun creating our own patterns using different objects. In our Unit of Inquiry we have looked at 5 key elements of a healthy lifestyle; Rest and Relaxation, Hygiene, Exercise, Relationships and Nutrition. We have identified examples of each and discussed their impact on our daily lives.

Central idea: Lifestyle choices can affect human health and well-being.

The children will be thinking more deeply about the idea of being healthy. To do this, we will look at 5 elements of a healthy lifestyle;-

  • nutrition
  • hygiene
  • relaxation
  • relationships
  • exercise

We shall be working with our partners to think about the different types of positive relationships we have in our lives. As we are very busy with our learning in school, we will be discussing the importance of rest and relaxation time at home.

Understand that numbers are made up of tens and units

Understand what more than and less than means

We will review our number bonds to 20 this week. Last week we started to look at odd and even numbers using our number lines and our daily mental starters. This week we will investigate numbers that are more or less than another. We will use our knowledge of tens and units to estimate numbers to 20.

We have begun to look at procedural texts in class. This week we shall continue to focus on the features of the genre (title, goal, requirements and steps). We will be starting our guided reading and focusing on recalling explicit ideas in a text.

Our grammar focus will be looking at the important role verbs play at the beginning of a sentence. We shall be learning to identify these from different texts.

Our spelling homework will begin this week and we shall choose two words of our choice to learn.

Monday 31st August

Home Reading books

Children have been receiving their home readers daily. Please remember that this book is to improve your child’s comprehension level and, therefore, they should be able to decode the text quite easily. Over the coming weeks, we will be formally assessing all Year 2 students’ reading levels and setting their reading targets.

Spelling

Your child will receive their first spelling words to learn at home today. The children have been given a list of words and they have chosen a further 2 words to learn at home. As explained at meet the teacher, we ask that children complete 3 activities and record one inside their spelling jotter. Could parents please sign the jotter to show that children have carried out the activities. We will have our spelling test on a Friday.

Fruity Friday

Every week at Beacon Hill we shall be having ‘Fruity Friday’. Children are asked to bring a piece of fruit as their healthy snack.

Green Team

We are helping to care for the environment in Year 2 and across the school. We will be focusing on recycling and reusing. It is our aim to have all children with a reusable snack box, lunch box and water bottle. We would like children and parents to help us by leaving any unnecessary packaging at home.

Please can you make sure that all your child’s belongings are all labelled with their name and new class.

Please can you make sure your child comes to school with a healthy snack and lunch, as well as a reusable water bottle.

Thank you.
