Portfolio reminder

Please return any remaining portfolios to school as soon as possible.

Kowloon Tong transport trips

During the week beginning 11th April, all Year 2 classes will visit Kowloon Tong transport interchange. This will serve as a provocation for our next U.O.I. which is all about transport systems. We will not require parent helpers for this trip. You will be receiving a permission slip to sign and return to school shortly.

Library Book Bag

Please make sure your child has their book bag and library books on the correct day.

Daily Collection

Children are taken by their class teacher to the front steps at 2:55pm daily, to allow them to leave the building in a safe manner before 3:00pm which is when the Y4-6 classes are dismissed. Please ensure you are there for 2:55pm to pick up your child. Thank you.

This week in Year 2 we have had another very busy week! We have been investigating materials further and getting nice and messy in the process! (Apologies for sending your children home looking a little untidy following some of our science and art experiences). We were lucky enough to listen to Wincy Chow (Abigail’s Mummy – 2M) telling us all about her fascinating job as an architect and the importance of shape and materials in her work. We have also been writing our own mini non-fiction books and finding out about multiplication for the very first time in Year 2.

People use and change materials to suit their needs

We have carried out more science experiments to think about how materials change. We have learnt that changes can be physical or chemical. We have been making slime and having fun using some interesting materials in Art.

Next week, we will continue to conduct more experiments and begin gathering together all our knowledge in order to create and write our very own non-fiction book about Materials.

The operations of multiplication and division are related to each other and used for problem solving.

This week, the children began thinking about multiplication for the very first time since they started learning at BHS! (We know many parents have already talked about multiplication with their children at home). To begin with we are thinking about multiplication as ‘repeated addition’ as this really helps children to understand what multiplications means, rather than just chanting times tables. We have made books and used manipulatives to record our understanding so far.

Next week, we will be beginning to think about arrays and reading “Amanda Bean’s Amazing Dream” to support us with this.

This week, we continued to identify the feature of reports (opening statement, subheadings, paragraphs, summary, etc) and recognise the different parts of an information report.

We have constructed some simple information together and begun to think about how we can use a ‘report skeleton’to help us plan our own reports about Beacon Hill School in the form of a mini booklet.

Next week, we will be using skeletons to plan a non-fiction book about Materials. Over the next fortnight we will be planning and publishing our own non-fiction texts! We will be trying to incorporate all the features of an information report, as well as, contents page, index and glossary.

During our phonics lessons, we will continue to look at Unit 6 in the Get Reading Right programme.

Spelling

Spelling homework is given out weekly. Our next spelling test will be on Friday 18th March. The focus is on endangered animals to tie-in with BHS Green Week!

Reading

Children continue to bring home one book per night to read with an adult. If they do not complete the book in one night, they are able to bring this home to read the following night. Please ensure that you are leaving a comment about your child’s reading in their reading journal.

Learning Centre Parent /Family Borrowing

As you will have seen in the school newsletter it is now possible for parents, younger children and other family members to borrow from our library. By registering for a family borrowing card you can borrow two books from any section of the library, including the new Parent Collection which contains books about healthy living, behaviour management, fun art activities and days out for children in Hong Kong.

The library is open for family borrowing at these times:

Fruity Friday

Every week at Beacon Hill we have ‘Fruity Friday’. Children are asked to bring a piece of fruit as their healthy snack. We will let you know in advance if and when PTA will be selling fruit so that your child can bring in money then.
