Year 2 Update Wk 23

Friday 4th March

Student-led conferences – please book your appointment time on the Gateway. Please note, your child must only come to school at the appointment time you select. There will be no normal classes on this date. Please also take the opportunity to visit the PMP room either before or after your conferences so the children can show you what they do there.

Portfolios

We are still missing some portfolios. Please remember to return your child’s portfolio to their class teacher by Monday 29th February. This is really important as we are currently updating portfolios in readiness for Student-led conferences next week.

Library Book Bag

Please make sure your child has their book bag and library books on the correct day.

Daily Collection

Children are taken by their class teacher to the front steps at 2:55pm daily, to allow them to leave the building in a safe manner before 3:00pm which is when the Y4-6 classes are dismissed. Please ensure you are there for 2:55pm to pick up your child. Thank you.

This week in Year 2 has been an exciting week of learning. We are well into our new Inquiry into how people use and change materials to suit their needs. In Maths we have started looking at 3D shapes and their properties. In English we have started looking at our new text type: information reports.

The children started looking at the three states of matter, they should know the difference between solids, liquids and gases. We have continued our work on describing the properties of different materials.

Next week, we will start looking at the changing states of matter as well as physical and chemical changes. We will be using the science inquiry cycle to help us investigate these changes.

Shapes are classified and named according to their properties.

The children have been inquiring into different 3D shapes and describing them according to their faces, edges and vertices. We look forward to sharing some of our shape knowledge with you next week.

Next week, we will be thinking about and making connections to 3D shapes in real life. The children will have an opportunity to explore the nets of certain 3D shapes and even create some of their own.

This week, we began to identify the feature of reports (opening statement, subheadings, paragraphs, summary, etc) and recognise the different parts of an information report. We looked at some examples of different reports and had a go at identifying the different features. We began to identify and sequence parts of an information report.

Next week, we will continue our work with the different features of an information report. We will also begin looking at non-fiction texts and the features of these non-fiction books.

During our phonics lessons, we will continue to look at Unit 6 in the Get Reading Right programme, this unit focuses on the phoneme /ue/ as in blue, few, rude, juice.

Spelling

Your child received their latest spelling words yesterday and our next spelling test will be on Thursday 3rd March.

Reading

Children continue to bring home one book per night to read with an adult. If they do not complete the book in one night, they are able to bring this home to read the following night. Please ensure that you are leaving a comment about your child’s reading in their reading journal.

Learning Centre Parent /Family Borrowing

As you will have seen in the school newsletter it is now possible for parents, younger children and other family members to borrow from our library. By registering for a family borrowing card you can borrow two books from any section of the library, including the new Parent Collection which contains books about healthy living, behaviour management, fun art activities and days out for children in Hong Kong.

The library is open for family borrowing at these times:

Fruity Friday

Every week at Beacon Hill we have ‘Fruity Friday’. Children are asked to bring a piece of fruit as their healthy snack. We will let you know in advance if and when PTA will be selling fruit so that your child can bring in money then.
