Year 2 Update Wk 20

Tuesday 2^nd February

Year 2 Bake sale – please provide 6-8 home-made cakes or cookies (NO nuts) in a disposable OR named container. Thank you.

Wednesday 3^rd February

Year 2 Dim Sum Lunch and CNY Flower Market visit with parents.

Friday 5^th February

China Day – children should dress in their Chinese clothing or red/gold clothing. They will take part in a range of activities to commemorate the new year and watch the special CNY assembly. Please note this will also incorporate a lion dance.

Chinese New Year school break

School will close for Chinese New Year at 3.00pm on 5th February and classes will resume at 8.45am on 15th February.

Friday 19^th February

Sports Day (more details to follow).

We are still waiting for some children’s permission slips for Dim Sum lunch on the 3rd February. Could you please return the permission slip with number of people attended if you have not done so already.

Portfolios

We are still missing some portfolios. Please remember to return your child’s portfolio to their class teacher a.s.a.p.

Library Book Bag

Please make sure your child has their book bag and library books on the correct day.

Daily Collection

Children are taken by their class teacher to the front stairs at 2:55pm daily, to allow them to leave the building in a safe manner by 3:00pm.

Thank you to all the parents for coming to sharing Day to share their child’s learning. They have put in so much hard work and effort preparing all their work particularly their celebration presentations. The children had a wonderful morning and loved sharing all their learning with you this morning. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

Celebrations and traditions can be expressions of shared beliefs and values

Next week the children will begin reflecting on this unit, they have learnt about the traditions, beliefs and values connected to a range of different celebrations. They have learnt about the features of traditions and celebrations as well as symbolic representations of different celebrations. They now have an understanding of why people celebrate in different ways. The children will complete a summative assessment and then begin thinking about our next units transdisciplinary theme; How the world works.

The operation of addition and subtraction are related to each other and are used to process information for problem solving

The children enjoyed sharing their Maths game with you and with their classmates. It has been a great opportunity for them to evaluate one another’s games and work on their mental addition and subtraction strategies in the process. We hope you enjoyed playing as much as they have! Next week the children will continue to consolidate their learning of their addition and subtraction strategies.

Next week the children will write a recount and reflection of their Sharing Day experiences. They will continue looking at the features of different types of poetry and writing their own. During our phonics lessons, we will continue with unit 5 with the focus on the phoneme ‘ay.’

We hope you have enjoyed reading your child’s work that was on display during Sharing Day.

Spelling

Spelling homework has resumed on a weekly basis. The next spelling test will take place on Friday 29th January 2016.

Reading

Children continue to bring home one book per night to read with an adult. If they do not complete the book in one night, they are able to bring this home to read the following night. Please ensure that you are leaving a comment about your child’s reading in their reading journal.

Learning Centre Parent /Family Borrowing

As you will have seen in the school newsletter it is now possible for parents, younger children and other family members to borrow from our library. By registering for a family borrowing card you can borrow two books from any section of the library, including the new Parent Collection which contains books about healthy living, behaviour management, fun art activities and days out for children in Hong Kong.

The library is open for family borrowing at these times:

Tuesday	8.15- 9.00am
Wednesday		2.45-3.30pm
Friday	8.30-9.15am

Fruity Friday

Every week at Beacon Hill we have ‘Fruity Friday’. Children are asked to bring a piece of fruit as their healthy snack. We will let you know in advance if and when PTA will be selling fruit so that your child can bring in money then.
