Year 1 Update – Wk 36
This week the children have really enjoyed getting stuck into our new unit. The children have been learning a lot about asking more precise questions that will help them find out exactly what it is that they want to know in their Information Literacy lessons with Ms Jeves. Lots of the children have been learning about how we get day and night. Maybe try asking your child what they used to think and what they think now about different changes that happen on the Earth and maybe see if they can also tell you how it impacts on the living things that live here. Maybe they will want to talk about nocturnal animals or about different people’s jobs in the day and the night.
Central Idea: The Earth’s changes affect the activity of living things.
Starting next week the children will start to think about which of the Earth’s changes they are most fascinated by and start to write open questions that will help them to find out as much as possible when they start to answer them.
After a great week learning about time, we will be moving on through our unit about measurements to weight next week. The children will be comparing two objects and using non-standard units to find out how many non-standard units (e.g. cubes) various objects weigh. When learning about weight the following vocabulary might be useful: measure, size, compare, guess, estimate, enough, not enough, too much, too little, too many, too few, nearly, roughly, close to, about the same as, just over, just under, weigh, weighs, balances, heavy/light, heavier/lighter, heaviest/lightest balance, scales, weight.
Next week we will be continuing to revisit writing to describe. We will practise orally and start to write short descriptions, describing photos and illustrations for changes in the Earth. You can practise at home to get their thinking ready! To push the children further you might want to ask them to add describing words or wow words.
