Some of our children have mentioned that now that they are becoming such fabulous readers that their parents don’t need to read for them any more. It is fantastic that so many children are able to read for themselves and are becoming more and more independent, but it is still vital that the children are being read to everyday, whether as a bed time story or at another time in the day. Try and find books that they cannot read by themselves but do understand the content. Talk together about what is happening and try and infer together what the characters are feeling or what happens next. Enjoy the time together and remember you are never too old to be read to!

How the World Works

Central Idea: The Earth’s changes affect the activity of living things.

Starting next week the children will start to think about which of the Earth’s changes they are most fascinated by and start to write open questions that will help them to find out as much as possible when they start to answer them.

After a great week learning about time, we will be moving on through our unit about measurements to weight next week. The children will be comparing two objects and using non-standard units to find out how many non-standard units (e.g. cubes) various objects weigh. When learning about weight the following vocabulary might be useful: measure, size, compare, guess, estimate, enough, not enough, too much, too little, too many, too few, nearly, roughly, close to, about the same as, just over, just under, weigh, weighs, balances, heavy/light, heavier/lighter, heaviest/lightest balance, scales, weight.

Next week we will be continuing to revisit writing to describe. We will practise orally and start to write short descriptions, describing photos and illustrations for changes in the Earth. You can practise at home to get their thinking ready! To push the children further you might want to ask them to add describing words or wow words.

The Stanley Ho Theatre at the Space Museum is showing a film called Earth, Sun and Moon at 11:00 on Saturday morning, check it out!
Also, the children may express an interest in finding out about the rocks and interesting geology that we have in Hong Kong. There are lots of different geology trips around Sai Kung volcanic rock region (you may need to go by boat) that could show the children the different types of rocks and tell them all about how the rocks formed millions of years ago and how they have changed.
Have a great time!
