Monday 11th April – BHS Classes Resume for Term 3
Friday 15th April – 1F Class Assembly

What a fantastic week! The children have enjoyed their first ”Green Week” and had a wonderful time at LIONS Nature Education Centre. We have been continuing to look at how plants are useful to us and also looking at how all living things are connected to each other, particularly items that have come from plants but are not food. At home you could list all the items together. The children have enjoyed sketching in the butterfly garden with Miss Chung.

Ms Jeves has been continuing to work with us for our Information Literacy lessons. This week we learned about keywords and their importance when retelling information. Over the past few weeks Ms Jeves has been using a thinking tool called “The Six Thinking Hats” and this week she introduced the black hat. Please take some time this week to talk to your child and ask them to explain what each hat stands for.

Miss Chung is currently organising Parent Helpers for UOI rotations and PMP for Term 3.  If you are able to commit to a weekly session (times listed below which still require filling), please email Miss Chung at susan.chung@bhs.edu.hk to let her know of your availability.  Thank you to those parents who have already confirmed their support.

Sharing the Planet

Central Idea: Plants sustain life on Earth

This week we have been encouraging the children to think about other uses for plants as well as for food. Next week we will follow on our learning from the trip to  LIONS Nature Education Centre and look into the connections between living things. We will make a start on our last line of inquiry, the choices that we make that affect plant life and look at a variety of case studies.

Please continue to talk to your child about the plant products around your home as well as what they are eating at mealtimes and where their food comes from.

Central Idea: Shapes are classified and named according to their properties

This week we continued with our addition and subtraction focus by setting up some practical problem solving tasks in the classroom. The children had to apply their knowledge to real life situations.

Next week we will complete our focus on addition and subtraction (although we will also be revising this in our mental maths activities) and moving on to 3D shapes. The children will mostly be learning about the features of the main 3D shapes and learning what makes each shape that shape.

This week the children have been looking at non-fiction texts about plants and living things and the children have started to create their own diagrams complete with labels and captions. Each class also started collecting plant related words for a class dictionary. Next week we will continue with this and start to look for keywords in texts and use keywords in our sentence writing.

We will be continuing our Information Literacy lessons with Ms Jeves.

We will continue on with these phonemes and camera words:

ch, sh, th, wh

what  going  give  like  do  says

Earth Hour – On Saturday 19th March at 8:30pm it is Earth Hour. The event is held annually, encouraging individuals, communities households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol for their commitment to the planet. Please join in with Earth Hour this Saturday and talk with your child about why it is important.
