Year 1 Update – Wk 24
Well done to all the Year One for completing their first Student-Led Conference at BHS! We hope you all had a great time at school and learned from the children’s reflections as to what their favourite things about school are and what they would like to accomplish before the end of Year One and beyond.
We have been learning a lot about what plants are useful for and where our food comes from. Starting last week and continuing for the whole unit our teacher librarian, Ms Jeves, has been joining us for two lessons a week to teach Information Literacy. This is an important part of learning about how to inquire, finding out and organising what we find out. This week we focused on classification and sorting out information. Ask your child what they know about classifying and their learning with Ms Jeves.
Please encourage your child to share their portfolio and their progression with others at home and make sure it comes back to school early next week.
Sharing the Planet
Central Idea: Plants sustain life on Earth
We have been finding out a lot about what plants give us, and discussing where our food comes from. We have had some very intriguing answers from the students. Many of our Year One students told us that they think noodles and spaghetti grow on trees and we have had some very interesting answers as to where food comes from, including rice coming from sheep’s feathers, rice coming from little rocks, bread from cows and cake made from green stuff. Even recognising whether the food was grown or man-made and what the ingredients could be appeared to be tricky.
Please take the time at each meal time this week to talk to your child about one or two if not all the foods on their plates. Talk about where the food came from, whether it grew or was made and where that was. Did it grow underground, on the ground or in a bush/tree. Was it made in a factory? Was it made at home? In the supermarket, look at the labels of the fruits and vegetables to see the countries that they are from and discuss how it got there. Why did it come so far? The children are very keen to find out and there are lots of examples in your homes and around your local area that will inspire you and them to have discussions at home related to what they are learning about at school.
Central Idea: Addition and subtraction are connected to each other and used to solve problems
This week in Year One we will be making connections between addition and subtraction, and also with multiplication. The children will inquire into the different ways to use the same numbers of objects to add and subtract, for example
4 + 3 = 7
3 + 4 = 7
7 – 3 = 4
7 – 4 = 3
Please remember in Year One we don’t focus on the written equation, rather we practice building familiarity with objects that the children can touch, move around and use to talk about what they did to discover their results and why. Although many children are able to copy a method, at school we are working towards the children indicating an understanding of the rule. A strong ability to visualise in mathematics has been shown to improve understanding later on.
We will continue on with these phonemes and camera words:
