Year 1 Update – Wk 18

Happy New Year! The children have had a wonderful first week back at school. They have worked hard focussing on our year long unit learning about how ”People can share stories in different ways to communicate”. The children enjoyed hearing and learning about stories.

Where we are in Place and Time

Central Idea: Exploring artefacts helps our understanding of people’s history

This coming week we will be starting our third shorter unit. This unit particularly focuses on the history of ourselves and others and how artefacts (things!) can help us know more about history. This coming week we will be especially looking at the children’s own history. It would be fabulous for each child to share a selection of photographs of their own personal history, please help them to send theirs in next week.

We would love to have some older or antique items to show the class and ask questions about. Please take a look around and let us know if there is anything you would like to temporarily donate.
We will be visiting the History Museum in two weeks time on Friday the 22nd of January.

Central Idea: The base 10 place value system is used to represent numbers and number relationships

For three weeks in our maths lessons the children will looking into the meaning of place value. During this unit the children will be learning about the base 10 place value system, the meanings of ones, tens and hundreds and how we use place value to solve problems. Many activities will involve using a lot of manipulatives, to produce different numbers.

This week we have enjoyed reading the favourites books of our favourite authors. The children have been looking into what makes a good author and how we can improve our writing. This focus will spill into next week a little.
The writing focus of our new unit will be recount writing. The children will be looking in to the features that make a good recount and the children will be reading recounts and verbally recounting as well as starting to write our own recounts.
Here again are the sounds and camera words from group 3.

Remember to read the weekly update and talk with your child about what they will be doing in class. If in doubt, ask your child’s class teacher.

There are many missing jackets, sweaters, and fleeces with no names! PLEASE put names on these as soon as you get them, even permanent marker will be fine.
