Thank you to all the parents who attended the Meet the Teacher evening on Tuesday. It was so lovely to see so many of you there and put names to faces. Please make sure that you return the Home School Profile that we gave out on the evening as this document is helpful in us building a picture of your child’s background.

This week many children have been absent from school with a stomach virus. We have been encouraging the children to practise good hygiene habits by washing their hands thoroughly after they have visited the bathroom and before snack and lunchtime. Please help us at home by emphasising the importance of this at school and home. If your child is unwell please make sure that they stay at home and rest until they have fully recovered. Thank you.

Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to help out with PMP, UOI Rotations and Mystery Storyteller. We greatly appreciate all your help and we know that the children will too. If anybody else would like to sign up to be a Mystery Storyteller please let your child’s class teacher know and they will add your name to the list.

The children have had another brilliant week in Year 1 and we are very impressed with the way in which they have continued to adapt well to all the new routines that come with school life. This week they have had their first whole week of eating lunch at school and we have been very pleased with the way in which they have organised themselves with what they need, eaten sensibly and tidied up afterwards.

Our first full day at school today was a great success with the children enjoying a playtime in the playground after they had eaten and an afternoon of fun activities. They have all worked very hard this week and we are sure that they are all now ready for a restful weekend.

People have characteristics, abilities and interests that form who they are.

This week the teachers and Educational Assistants have shared their “All About Me” bags with the children. The classes have found out all about their hobbies, favourite foods, families and cultural backgrounds. Please ask your child to tell you what they have found out about the adults who work in their classes with them. They should be able to tell you lots of interesting information!

Next week the children will have the opportunity to bring some items of their own to school and tell us all about themselves. We will send home some information about this later in the week but in the meantime please chat to them at home about what they might like to bring that could represent their preferences and hobbies and that they would be happy to talk about.

We have started our Maths unit based on the number system this week and we have been tuning into the unit by reading stories based on numbers, singing number songs and some classes have been on a Number Hunt around the school.

Next week we will be continuing with our Number Hunt, encouraging the children to look for numbers in our environment and think about how useful they are to us. We will also be playing number games based on counting forwards and backwards and the children will be exploring and playing with the Maths equipment in our classrooms.

This week the children have started looking at the first set of phonemes from Get Reading Right.

Over the next 6 weeks the children will be learning to blend these eight sounds together to make words and also segment words into sounds. This will help the children with their reading and spelling skills.

The children have brought home their first home reading book this week and I am sure that they have been eager to share their book with you. We want the children to become confident readers who develop a real love for reading. Please try and make reading a special and positive time for your child at home. We would like your child to read for up to 15 minutes on a daily basis in a quiet and comfortable space where they can really concentrate and enjoy what they are reading. We would recommend that each day you read the book with your child, encourage them to retell the story in their own words and then ask them a few questions about what they have read (read, retell and question). Happy reading!

Children at BHS have access to an online Maths resource called Mathletics. Mathletics gives the children the opportunity to practice their Maths skills and enjoy Maths at home. Your child has a username and password that has been stuck into their Home-School Diary. Please take some time to explore the website at home and have a go at some of the tasks and games. Have fun!

Now that the children have been in school for a few weeks maybe try and arrange a play date with somebody from their class. Play dates are invaluable in the children developing their social and communication skills and for having fun with their friends.

Well done to all the children for another great week. We hope you all have a restful and enjoyable weekend.
