Welcome back to a new school year! Well done to all those children who have been organised and brought in their stationery packs already. We look forward to meeting year 5 parents at the ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening on September 1st.
We have been impressed with everyone’s level of maturity and willingness to get straight into year 5 life. As this our first week back, we have been learning new classroom routines and co-constructing our essential agreements.
Transdisciplinary Theme: Who We Are
Central Idea: Developing skills may help us to learn about ourselves and help us to interact better with others.
Lines of Inquiry:
This week and next week will be our tuning in stage of our first unit of inquiry. We have discussed the meaning and vocabulary connected to our central idea. The children have been looking at social situations and ways to improve the character’s interactions.
In Year 5 the children are grouped based on ability for each number unit. The children have completed the start of year assessments and will be finding out their place value number groups early next week. These groupings are flexible and are likely to change between number units.
The children have written their holiday recounts which will be assessed and used to set initial writing targets. It has also been interesting to learn about what you’ve all been up to over the summer break.
We’ve begun assessing the students on their spelling and we have sent their first set of spelling words to learn over the weekend. The children will be doing spelling buddy tests three times a week starting Monday.
Over the course of next week, your child will be choosing a book to bring home in line with their level advised by their year 4 teacher. In the next few weeks we will be assessing each student on their reading to see if their comprehension level has improved.
As your children are now in the upper school, they are expected to be completing 30-45 minutes of homework each night. This will be made up of: approx 15-20 minutes reading with an adult, 10-15 spelling work, and their weekly assigned task.
This week’s homework:
Make an A4 front cover for your year 5 portfolio. This must include: full name, class, photo(s) of you, and the title ‘Year 5 portfolio 2015-16’.
Students may wish to use an online program to help design their cover (e.g. Photovisi) and could include favourite subjects, hobbies and learner profiles. Alternatively they could hand draw or paint their cover.
Homework is always to be handed in by the following Wednesday.
