Learning Technology Monthly Update #4

In Year 1 students have been continuing to use various web based and iPad apps with a focus on creating. They have made a simple movie out of pre-existing clips. We will be using some of these tools over the coming weeks to produce a simple story using photos, animation and voice. In the week beginning December 7th all students at BHS will be completing the ‘hour of code’ to help them begin with the concepts of coding.

Over the last few weeks students have been looking at a few different ways of creating movies through video and animation. We chose to delay starting the logging in of school sites in order to get the passwords all setup correctly first. In the coming 2 weeks we will begin logging in to The Beacon after first completing our work on stop-motion animation. In the week beginning December 7th all students at BHS will be completing the ‘hour of code’ to help them begin with the concepts of coding.

In Year 3 students have begun to learn about adding new third party tools to their Google Drive accounts. We have looked at image editors and tools for putting together resources. They will be completing this work with image manipulation next week before moving on to adding other useful tools for presentation. In the week beginning December 7th all students at BHS will be completing the ‘hour of code’ to help them begin with the concepts of coding.

Year 4 students have done a fantastic job with collecting data through forms and building infographics. Over the coming weeks we will be looking at adding a digital painting tool to our Google Drive accounts and learning how to use it to work with a layered project. Students will produce an image consisting of elements cut from other images and combined together. In the week beginning December 7th all students at BHS will be completing the ‘hour of code’ to help them begin with the concepts of coding.

The Year 5 students completed their work on Scratch with some amazing results that we will be publishing soon through the school website. We will now be moving on to learning about different presentation tools available and creating presentations about cyber safety and responsible use of technology in schools. In the week beginning December 7th all students at BHS will be completing the ‘hour of code’ to help them begin with the concepts of coding.

In Year 6 we will be looking at a number of web based tools and mobile iPad apps to help with the recording of Science experiments. This will include tools for creating media-rich explanations and time-lapse video. In the week beginning December 7th all students at BHS will be completing the ‘hour of code’ to help them begin with the concepts of coding.

Coming up on December 7th – 12th is the worldwide ‘Hour of Code’. The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries promoting the learning of computer science and programming. Students at BHS will all be participating through code.org and all their accounts have now been created ready for this. In school diaries you will find, next week, the details for logging in to this. We are very happy for students to begin learning at home with this and doing more than an hour of code would be very welcome.
